2nd night, Nastenka’s story → Nastenka explains how she fell in love with the lodger that lived in her grandmother’s attic, and how he promised that he’ll take her out of that situation (her being trapped with her grandmother) if he could after spending the year in Moscow for work.
Now he has come back but he isn’t talking to her, after 3 days here, and she writes a letter to him, expecting his answer.

4th night & morning: He confesses his love to Nastenka and she —who hasn’t received an answer nor encountered her beloved lodger— says that she doesn’t love him but maybe in the future, as she doesn’t have her lodger’s company, will—and proposes for him to move with her.
It’s all great, but suddenly the lodger appears and Nastenka runs to him. Morning, a letter from her announcing they’re marrying.

3rd night → Nastenka is worried about when she’ll meet her beloved lodger. The main character, meanwhile, feels as blue as he’s ever been, as she constantly thanks him for being a good friend and not developing a romantic feeling on her.
He feels so distant and alone even though she’s glad and happy to be with him. The next day it rains so they don’t meet, but the day after they do. Expecting news from her.

2nd night (his story) → Nastenka insists him on telling her his story, and he explains it to her. He has always lived as a dreamer and a shy guy, overthinking everything and imagining other scenarios in his head—as to escaping reality by portraying himself in company of other people.

That night, he encounters a girl who seems to be crying, she leaves for a street and is followed by an older man who the main character repels. He effusively talks with her and both agree to meet the next night again, but she advises him not to fall in love with her.
