The problem with this series is that we almost never see the most interesting scenes which go down in the background. The idea of nyphron having tea with Jared is taking me out, I’ve been utterly robbed of seeing that go down

So far the “forgiveness” situation isn’t as moralizing as I was dreading that it might be, but as much as I do believe in forgiveness I’m having a hard time reconciling the idea of forgiving someone because you have no right to judge them… like, if you have decided that there is a hurt to forgive then doesn’t that mean you judged that they did something wrong in the first place

The “linguistics” in this series is driving me insane because it depends on rhunic being English in its verbal form but with a completely different alphabet, etymology (of most or all words), and general history. For me this is super aggravating: either use the irl version accurately or make up something fully original, I hate these bastardizations

Edvard the Gula may be the most minor background character to finally be named but the only thing we ever learn he did (besides get killed) is badass AND satisfying. Go Edvard

Also WHERE is my treya/mawyndule reunion? I feel like this whole book has been a saga of consoling brin as she has an awful time and while I don’t begrudge our girl a little encouragement it’s been hella boring when I’m really itching to see some of the other characters. We haven’t even seen moya et al a single time yet!

I’m having such anxiety about the mawyndule situation, if he came up with the idea to do the thing then I’d just be like “hell yeah you go king”, but I hate the concept of him being convinced and pushed by other people. Considering how we see him feel about the whole thing much much later in the timeline of the world of elan it’s upsetting me. Although tbf to all the other people involved they absolutely have a good point and mawyndule taking responsibility for his own actions has probably never happened ever, I just wish some of those other people had just taken it upon themselves to handle it instead of being like “let’s make the kid do it”
I don’t doubt that it’s possible to forgive complex trauma but I do think that the process is gradual because you can’t just decide to be healed. I’m sure the right conversations and introspective realizations can make leaps and bounds in that journey but I’m having a hard time with the portrayal of letting go of the past being a one and done thing. Healing from trauma is rarely described as linear and I feel like part of the defining characteristic of that is that it haunts the victim even when all they want is to move on. Surely you can’t just say “okay I’m done being traumatized and upset about that now”, surely there will be good and bad moments in the process along the journey. The abyss storyline just says “executive decision” and skips to the end of the process with one conversation
