I have now learned that Charles Stratton (“General Tom Thumb,” the famous performer with dwarfism who worked for P.T. Barnum) and his wife, Lavinia Warren, were given a wedding reception at the White House by the Lincolns. A weird detail that I was not anticipating from this book.
