robin hobb is so good at character work because starling really grates at me sometimes but her experiences and backstory really explain her character motivations in a really satisfying way. the quotes about her and fitz both being victims and how starling will never be able to leave the war behind even if it ends are so devastating. such wonderful three-dimensional female characters in this series
