Wie gewaltsam das alles war. Welch ein starkes, rücksichtsloses Leben das alles atmete, zu stark für Doralice, es machte sie plötzlich ganz schwach, es machte sie krank, der Geruch des Seewassers, der Fische, der feuchten Fischerjacken, all dieses Fleisch der Männer und feisten Fische bedrückte sie, sie wurde ganz bleich.

The immediate context is that the speaker's parther has been holding her up over the waves while they were havi g a walk along the seashore. Sunce he is talkative person he wants to interpret this as symbolic of their relationship rather than just trying to keep her clothes dry, then comes her response above.
Equally in a turn of a century novel 19-20th saying that something should not be symbolic is probably itself symbolic 😂
