We had to leave. So the following morning, we fled our home—its books of Somali poetry, its collections of African art and music, as well as the safety of its walls. Baba and two of my uncles went to my great-grandmother’s house. I didn’t get to say goodbye to her, because the rest of our family immediately embarked on the journey to get out of Somalia.

As the war went on, there was no more news, no school, no mosque, no hospitals. Everything was taken over and repurposed into makeshift dwellings for those fleeing violence.
