ok ivre read a bunch 2day:
the yips was pretty good
the after that was okay
googling strangers was personal and effective and the indianapolis trilogy was well done
monopoly was fine and the mario kart wasnt, reminded me of the bad game essay collection ive read, drawing shallow connections between games and reality as if games arent justified to be written about on their own. salt flats was good the next two okay

solid couple of essays. I enjoy the increased sense of continuity between them. I feel like I really get to know John through the overlapping stories of his life framed as reviews.

the sunset essay was pretty good. it also properly clicked with me that the format of this book is more short-form reviews than essays (only using the latter superficially)

interesting fact-dumping, some of the essays (hall of presidents is a good example) suffer harshly under their small length and restricted scope. green is here to quickly deliver a point, drop it on your doorstep and go away without looking back. theres none of the foreplay that makes essays exciting here

vignetten more than essays, small reviews of things that Green loves with a „human condition/age“ throughline; i like it but its not the same as my fav essays (like a horro short story in comparison to a solid two-sentence-horror post)
