I just finished “Goodbye, my brother”. Not only is it riveting, it is deeply moving. The story deals with a summer family reunion at the cottage. One brother, an abstinent lawyer, attempts to put a damper on everything. Cheever makes his presence at once looming and pathetic. The story made me reflect on the instances where I have been a bit of a sad-sack pessimist. I’m looking to the good where I can.
