“What was absolutely true and right? What was absolutely false and wrong? And how could any sane person live without crossing the borders everyday.

Lies were the life blood of the world. Lies activated the menacing truth he now understood which was - take what you want or others would take it”

WOW! That ending was grim 😭😫

My heart 😫💔😍

This might be one of the best books I read this year.

The writing is technically exquisite - such precision. Majumdar is a master of the written word. Every sentence feels deliberate, honed, exact.

And the story is effective. I genuinely don’t know where it’s going. I’m reading with my breath held, hoping - pleading - that it doesn’t end in more heartbreak 🥰

“He understood from every thing he had endured in his own life that the worth of honesty presented as noble before school children was itself a lie.

The honest souls who paused to deliberate on morals found when they made their choice that the treasure was gone.”

I like this one already.I like writer who don’t write people one way.I like writers disappear into the background & let the story tell itself❤️

“Soon she would say goodbye to this kitchen. It struck her then that the city wasn’t only what was outside. This was the city too - a tiny corner of a possible nowhere but here” 😍

The world building in this book is skillful and breathtaking!
Teach us your ways Majumdar 🔥🔥🔥

Ayo This book upset me so much. It’s reminiscent of The Embassy by Chimamamda Ngozi Adiche (a Short Story in her ‘The Thing Around Your Neck’ collection) it also has similarities to ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’. However there is no light at the end of the tunnel here. Even though the writing was so beautiful and often poetic, this was on the most depressing stories I have come across lately. Like why? 😔
