He told me several times that he’d returned to Everest in 1996 largely as a result of Hall’s advocacy—he said Rob had called him from New Zealand “a dozen times” urging him to give it another shot—and this time Doug was absolutely determined to bag the top.

I’d never experienced anything like it: crushing pain between my temples—pain so severe that it was accompanied by shuddering waves of nausea and made it impossible for me to speak in coherent sentences.
AMS sounds just lovely. the fact that there are people who put themselves through this by choice will never stop being fascinating to me.

Why did veteran Himalayan guides keep moving upwards, ushering a gaggle of relatively inexperienced amateurs - each of whom had paid as much as $65,000 to be taken safely up Everest - into an apparent death trap?

Ppl with stupid amounts of money will basically get carried up the mountain while being half conscious, all to later brag about their achievement 🙃

i mean if someone were to tell me they climbed everest, id be like, yeah ok, but whats the brekkie? :D
but seriously the more i read about this business the more unsavory it seems to me. im guessing its gotten even worse since 1996.
