i might have bought the arden shakespeare edition of hamlet even though i already had the penguin classics one, purely for my shakespeare class (absolutely not because i love shakespeare a little too much and have a weakness for scholarly editions of his work). but wow, that introduction was so good i have zero regrets.

“something is rotten in the state of denmark.”
this has got to be one of the most iconic lines not only in shakespeare, but in literature, precisely because of how much it reveals with so little.

reading it again, act 1 already makes it clear that hamlet's tragedy isn’t just his father’s death, it’s how everyone around him twists grief into suspicion and chaos. i can’t help but relate to feeling stuck between what’s expected and what feels right.
