The “I'm not like other girls” trope is especially obnoxious when it's a literal 11 year old.

Wow, SUCH an original character. A preteen orphan whose parents died in mysterious circumstances and is now being raised by abusive relatives, and all she has left of her parents is a strange necklace, and she feels different from all the other kids because she's so smart.

Why indeed?
Well, let me just say, if you put a book on your Christmas list, DO NOT crack and read the book before Christmas. Especially if one of your holiday traditions is to give each other books and stay up late reading them. Otherwise, you may be stuck reading a book you just read and didn't like, and pretending you've never read it and you're very excited.
Anyway, if I was going to be punished for my reading crimes like that, I figured I might as well get credit for 100 more pages in my reading total.
FYI Elizabeth is just as annoying a second time through.
