Another audio book from the library.

I’m hoping to target gaps in my knowledge this year of the Tudor period, so for general reading I’m focusing on 1485-1520s then 1547-1603, as my knowledge mostly concerns Henry VIII’s later reign and then Elizabeth’s life and her time during Edward and Mary’s reigns.

So Elizabeth does have a biographical account of her upbringing here, but it’s in far more detail compared to Mary’s and I don’t think that is down to lack of sources, since Mary became Queen when she was six days old thus immediately important and noteworthy. In comparison Elizabeth was never expected to be Queen, but the author has given far more detail for Elizabeth. I don’t agree with everything she says

Mostly so far this is a biography of Mary Queen of Scot’s childhood and adolescence. Whereas Elizabeth’s has been skipped because it’s so well known. I’m really enjoying it and learning loads that I had no clue about

Henry Not to say that I won’t be reading some books and sources on the fall of Anne Boleyn and I would also like to focus on Edward VI, which I am going out on new years to get a fancy notebook to record my thoughts as I research him.

Ana I always find it interesting how you and I work/research in the same period, yet completely different aspects of said period. I recently brought 'The Scapegoat: The Brilliant Brief Life of the Duke of Buckingham', which is all about James I's boytoy, but my reason for buying is mostly spurred on by James I's affiliation with Macbeth. I'm always interested in your Tudor reading !

Henry That’s so interesting!! I admire your interest in Shakespeare and the literature of the period because I actually find that a lot harder to understand compared to the history. I’m certainly someone who wants to engage in the literature aspect of the period more, but honestly I am not sure where to start. Were you ever aware of my interest at college? I think I had an idea of what you were interested in.
And please tell me how you find the book :)

Ana There really is so much to engage with in the Early Modern period. It really depends on what you’re interested in and what you might gravitate towards. I think that I was aware of your interest in College, yes ! I could have sworn that we had conversations about the Tudors. My interest was slightly blundered by College / my awful teacher, so I mostly regained my passion for it during Uni. I will do !!

Henry I have such a poor memory of that time oops. I think I vaguely remember mention of this awful teacher, I certainly understand how it can almost ruin an interest. I’m glad you have gotten it back tho.

I’m mostly looking to get into Shakespeare because he is the most famous and I genuinely am interested. The archaic language is the challenge for me and it’s something I certainly need to face at some point.
