I know there’s a lot of hypotheses about Tom Bombadil and what he’s doing in this book, and I don’t claim to know much about these, but what I CAN say is that the chapters on the Old Forest and Tom Bombadil remind me SO much of George MacDonald’s Phantastes! The description of the forest, the sinister trees, and even Bombadil and Goldberry’s safe haven between two dangerous places! So it feels oddly fitting
