This book should be categorized as horror.

OMG. Chapter 9 ends with relaying the history of some of the most misogynistic and disgusting comments and actions I have ever heard.

This isn’t the first time that I’ve heard of some of the brutalities that women were subjected to for “treatment” of “hysteria” (whatever nebulous thing that might have been at the time, but was always some variation of “inconveniently not male body”) but the timing of this litany of abuses and traumas and surgical nightmares for me personally is hitting hard. Ooof.
