I ended up googling the author. She was 80 when this book was released in 2024. That explains the writing; I feel like the way she writes was much more common back when she first began, in the 80s and 90s. In addition to my other observations, there’s also been a bunch of head-hopping in the historical sections. However, I’ve gotten into the story now; I’m liking the modern more than the historical thus far.

Picked this up from the library cuz she’s been compared to Susanna Kearsley. I’m not far yet, but the story has promise. But the writing, oof. Run-on sentences and excessively long paragraphs, dialogue with lines where it’s unclear who’s speaking, lots of short and shallow scenes that make me feel a bit like I’m scrolling Instagram reels. She’s a bestselling author? I’m expecting an amazing plot. 😆
