This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I like that Rivers doesn’t shy away from tough topics like these, because, even though it’s horrible, Christians can’t turn a blind eye to the evil of this world. It’s best to show how awful this world is and show hope and redemption through Jesus. Which is ultimately my goal for writing my own books. Rivers will most certainly be an inspiration for my writing

Spoiler
I’m sorry but if Miriam truly cares for Angel like a sister, she wouldn’t be entertaining thoughts and feelings of being with Michael. Ofc ppl make mistakes, but she knows what she's doing, she’s said it to Angel’s face, and yet she continues to pursue Michael while he’s married to the woman she claims she loves a sister. If nothing else, Elizabeth should say something to her. This isn’t right

Paul talks all about her not being worthy of Michael because she was a prostitute but he’s failing to look at the log in his own eye and fix the hate that’s in his own heart. And that he committed fornication and adultery too (¬⤙¬ )
Now after pointing out a fictional character’s sins I feel the need to take a look at the log in MY OWN eye (╥﹏╥)

The fact that both of the protagonists have struggles they need to bring before God is so refreshing. Angel isn’t perfect, but neither is Michael and I love that Rivers doesn’t hide the scary thoughts that pass through his mind. This book is carefully ripping my heart to pieces it’s so heartbreakingly beautiful

His hands were so gentle. He took such care. When her feet were clean, he kneaded her aching calves. He cast the dirty water outside and poured more, setting the pan in her lap. He took her hands and washed them as well. He kissed her stained, scratched palms and worked salve in. Then he wrapped them with warm bandages.
All this after she ran from him, rebuked, and hit him. My heart is aching y’all 🥺

Amen! I feel the same way about T.I. Lowe’s writing. She’s blunt and forces you to understand the evil in the world, and the how true redemption and forgiveness can only be found in Jesus. Her book Lulu’s Café was hard at first, but as Leah finds redemption and healing it becomes heart achingly beautiful. Same with Indigo Isle

THIS! there's a difference between glorifying evil and depicting it. some of the best books i've read have dealt with very hard topics but ultimately bringing a message of hope and redemption through Christ. i think sometimes christfic authors are put into a box of having to write these PG stories that we miss out on a lot of opportunities to proclaim Christ even in the mess and brokenness of the world.
A lot of reviews on both of them are harsh bc Christians read it expecting a fluffy romance and are disgusted when faced with hard truths. I find it sad and disheartening that they write disappointed reviews that it had heavy content when it was never the authors intention for it to be a fluffy romance. She intended to show that real redemption, fullness, and forgiveness only comes from Jesus, not the world.
Exactly, @Finch @Lauren!Authors that take on the challenge to show that there is redemption through Jesus from ANY FORM of evil is very important. I understand not wanting to read stuff like this, but not everything about Christian living is cute and fluffy, so our media should not be like that as well. Just because you slap “Christian” on the label does not automatically mean fluffy, lighthearted, happy-go-lucky.
Jesus was tortured and nailed to a Cross. He bled so much water flowed from his body. And being crucified historically was meant to slowly suffocate the victim to death. We forget the gravity of His sacrifice because Christianity has been reduced to this “feel-good, everything is cupcakes and rainbows” way of life.
And I agree @Lauren that all Christians are expected to write these PG stories. And I’m gonna be frank, my stories that I’m writing are not PG. They are certainly PG-13. My characters get dragged through hell and back, and it deals with very heavy topics, but my ultimate goal is to show that no matter what you do, no matter what you go through, there IS hope in Jesus. It’s the broken and the bruised that need Jesus. Jesus came for the sinners and I think Christian media has forgotten that to a degree
I’m honestly afraid I will get put into the “controversial author” bucket that Rivers is in when I publish because my books have a similar tone to hers, though more 16/17+, this is def 18+
Yes! I’ve come to realize that while I do enjoy one once and while, I don’t like the PG christian books as much anymore. Now don’t get me wrong, I love it when books talk about Jesus and God, but when they make the characters life all happy go lucky with no real substance that makes me mad. Christians are persecuted, torn down, and killed every day for their faith. Most christian’s like to turn a blind eye to evil and pretend everything’s chipper…. I prefer the raw honesty that yes, the world is evil and dark and horrific, but Jesus is the way the truth and the life. If people open up to him he will fill them with his light and love and kindness and make everything better. He forgives, no matter how lost and far gone the person is. So I personally prefer to read about the hard parts, because it makes me all the more grateful I’ll never have to face it because of Christ.

I wanted to be a romance reader so bad that I spent my money on all these booktok romances, but I’m finding I’m drawn more to the heavy stuff, the books with substance. Hence why I’m very much enjoying Redeeming Love. I’m romantic, but romance books aren’t for me, if that makes sense. I like romance, but when it’s realistic, has a purpose, and makes my heart ache
