This novel is many things at once -- a woman's narrative of migration/fleeing China with her father; a exploration of individual and collective memory as it impacts the individual and, even more so, as it creates the future and particular pasts; what it means to imagine; and how to reconcile never knowing. While beautifully leading us through the questions, she also teaches us about Arendt, Spinoza, and Lao Tsu
