I just read about Mc Carthy and the invention of LISP. Very interesting. I was reminded of ((the power of recursion) and (of the fact that (many (programs and procedures)) can be (formulated in) a (list processing paradigm)).

Michael Given what’s happening in the US, and how big-tech money is helping to prop it up—including Jeff Bezos’s opportunistic alignment with the Trump administration—plus Amazon’s track record of weakening users’ control over “owned” ebooks (see Kindle), I’m choosing to prioritize Amazon-free platforms that respect readers and their data.

My rule #1 is now simple:
Export your data while you still can.
It’s (still) very easy to move your data and reviews to StoryGraph
- Sign in on the Goodreads website (a desktop browser is easiest).
- Go to My Books.
- In the left sidebar (often under Tools), click Import and Export.
- Under Export, click Export Library. A csv with all your reviews and book catalogue file can be saved.
- In storygraph you can import the .csv file
Thats it. It takes only 10minutes and is super easy.

Why I’m doing this:
Over time, I’ve become increasingly uncomfortable with how Goodreads has shifted toward Amazon’s commercial priorities and “Trump bowing” leadership - and with broader signals that digital “ownership” can be weakened through policy changes and external pressure. I want a reading community that feels open, user-centered, and built for readers—not for selling to them.

At the same time, I genuinely like the Goodreads community, so I’m not deleting my account. I’ll stay connected there—but I also want to actively support and strengthen alternatives.

I invite you to join me on StoryGraph :-)
