Well the book itself is interesting, it doesn't take psychologist or sociologist to figure out why fans act so fucking crazy. People are assholes, and when their team wins they're bigger assholes. And when their team lose they're the biggest assholes.

This whole freedom of speech first amendment thing, people really have to understand what the first amendment protects. The First Amendment protects you from being arrested by The government for speaking out against it. It doesn't protect you from losing your job or people calling you out because you said some stupid shit on the Internet and act like a total asshole.

"He was basically targeted for analyzing the team with objectivity."
When Kirk Herbstreit is anything but objective. When they had that whole greatest team in college football thing and the 95 huskers and the 97 huskers were in the final four, he whined like a little bitch about it. He's not objective.

I should not be surprised at the sports death penalty originated in ancient Rome, when Emperor Nero punish rioters at a gladiator match By canceling the rest of the season after a riot broke out.

Interesting information on how the word fan came to be. It came from Latin term fanaticus which indicated a religious devotee. The Italian word for fan is tifosi which comes from the Greek word for the disease typhoid and it's contagion and confusion. In Chinese the word for fan is quimi which is literally translated to "A person bewitched or charmed by a ball"

"… Ohio State football fans - known in the sports world as some of the most zealous in the country…"
I think the words you meant were classless and awful. OSU sucks and so do their fans
