i thought the song was a misplaced folkloric nod but she might have meant it more in a mythologizing way. who knows

still really good, fun putting the puzzle pieces together

this is really picking up especially after milkman arrived in the small town ! the writing and connecting of characters and themed was so good i couldnt put the book down for half an hour

go off Lena !!! loved that soeech and that side of the narrative, milkman is a spoiled brat which is made 10x worse by him being a man. the stealing / gold plot line will probably be his road to redemption where he gets rid of his hatred of his family and develops morals of his own (hopefully)

the corinthians side story was cute !

theres so much happening wow! i liked hagar but maybe because she reminds me of violet; the gold idk about yet; the "race war" years is an interesting place for a morrison novel to go and i havent read anything on it yet xcept for that great bbaldwin essay a while back

love how morrison can make me empathetic even for ruth here; also i see the common thread of the violent and deranged sides of love between this and jazz

vonnegut said something about violence that reminds me of morrison. her characters and her world exude it

the incest was surprising and shocking and shouldnt have surprised me i guess. (p.110) „he was already Dead“ … okay
