Still going to write a "review" for this issue - the 1st of what was supposed to be the Red Hood series by Gretchen Felker-Martin & Jeff Spokes - even though we will not get a full run because of the cancellation & recall. I read it! I have opinions! & if you're on my Goodreads page you are, in fact, bearing witness to My Soap Box (#mysoapbox) & here my opinion is free.

Love the drowsy, worn down atmosphere of New Angelique & can see it slipping to something heady & tumultuous. While I am... noticing that all the background characters are noticeably black while all named characters (esp. the police force) are white, we were just opening the story; suspicious but not damning - could have led to more in time. Setting was impeccable; Spokes made something magnetic. [2/5]

Jason is a tortured loser again & I adore it (except that fuck ass haircut, we got white streak!Jason but at what cost...) Felker-Martin did a wonderful job of personifying New Angelique in the writing (which is a new location for me) & making it feel raw, sweltering, & exactly the place I'd expect a self-loathing Jason to go. I love Huntress' character design here, enjoy the established tension but rapport she has with Jason, and I quite liked Royale, despite the incredibly brief appearance. It's fully the mask, okay. I am a sucker for aesthetics & for the purpose Royale served, it worked. While the double-crossing was a little predictable, it's literally the 1st volume & a throw-away character, so no harm, no foul. [4/5]
