Come hell or high water I’m pulling myself over the finish line on this one. This is a sweet but honestly kinda boring read for the first 200 pages that the modern cozy fantasy niche would adore. I struggle with a slow paced fantasy book and I think my final rating is gonna reflect that when I’m done.

Any time the pacing rights itself and something happens, right after we get three more chapters of them sitting in a castle talking about things. I think Tolkien fans would love this especially those of a younger audience but it’s like pulling teeth for me. I’m not interested in all this world building if nothing happens in it.

This is a really charming coming of age story that I would have adored as a teenager. So far theres nothing in it that’s too dark or depressing and I find that extremely refreshing after how hard fantasy has trended towards the divergent branches of romantasy and grim dark the past five years. Feels good to visit something older from before these trends
