Kinda fun. I think it's going to be hard for me to spend over 1200 pages with characters who seem to have so little interiority. I somehow didn't realize this was another napoleonic novel, and I can't help but compare it to War & Peace, which seems to understand humans so much better, and to care about them so much more.

Several long snow days without much else to do besides be angry and afraid have helped me appreciate this a little more, at least for some escapism.

Judi I think if you stick with it, you might end up liking it more than you think. Count of Monte Cristo is a favorite of mine, so it may be my own bias to say so. But IMO, the lack of interiority is a set up and if you can make it through the first part, I think you will enjoy how it plays out.

Ty Thanks. I don't dislike it, it's just more plot-focused than most things I read. I'll give it at least another hundred pages.
