I’m still not sure what the story’s actually about—the plot seems to have wandered off while McEwan admires how clever his protagonist is. The man can turn a sentence, though, and that’s what’s keeping me turning pages.
It’s not terrible, just a bit too intrigued by the aroma of its own flatulence; most characters are pretty insufferable, and a few word choices and ideas haven’t aged well.

Well I’m here to check in…. 200 pages down. Still no actual plot. This is more of a mood piece if you’re in the mood for a douchebag simulator. One thing does impress me though: that Ian McEwan can manage to operate a keyboard while pretzeled in half with his head so far up his own ass is a marvel of modern acrobatics. So there’s that…
