One thing does impress me though: that Ian McEwan can manage to operate a keyboard while pretzeled in half with his head so far up his own ass is a marvel of modern acrobatics. So there’s that…

I’m still not sure what the story’s actually about—the plot seems to have wandered off while McEwan admires how clever his protagonist is. The man can turn a sentence, though, and that’s what’s keeping me turning pages.
It’s not terrible, just a bit too intrigued by the aroma of its own flatulence; most characters are pretty insufferable, and a few word choices and ideas haven’t aged well.
