“You can’t pay for tragedy with more tragedy or draw life from death.”
This book is the best I have yet to read of Clare’s. The way the trauma of the war, the resulting racism and discrimination, the way each character has been forced to grow up too quickly, the way each character has been impacted so deeply by the prior events, it is all magnificently done. I do truly regret not finishing it sooner

“It was a sort of love few other people could understand. It was total and it was overwhelming and it could be cruel.”
“When you were twelve years old and you were all that stood between your family and annihilation, you didn’t learn moderation.”
I’m obsessed with how she writes these relationships and how tightly they cling to each other to the point where it isn’t healthy out of pure fear
