Just read Chapter Ten. Back in the past, Malorie has lived in the safe house for two weeks. One night, a party with rum and weed is ruined when a radio DJ sanely commits suicide on the air. Right after that, another woman arrives at the house: a neighbor named Olympia, four months pregnant, just like Malorie. Don is not happy at all and the others are gonna be exhausted, but this might be good for Malorie.

Just read Chapter Thirteen. Felix goes to the well to get water but hears a noise every time he goes. The third time, he hears it coming from the well, then the bucket feels heavier when he brings it up. Hearing wet footprints behind him, he runs back to the house in a panic and tells the others what happened. Nothing followed Felix back to the house, but the housemates block the windows and doors to be safe.

Just read Chapter Twelve. Back in the past, Tom tells Malorie the story of George, the house's owner. He had a theory that looking at the creatures indirectly would be harmless. He tried it out by recording out the window for five hours and watching the footage on TV. It didn't work, and George killed himself while watching the footage. Damn. So much for that theory. Poor George.

Just read Chapter Eleven. Back in the present, Malorie reflects more on her training of the two kids, believing that she has trained them well and that Tom would have been proud of her. The children's strict obedience to her command sharply contrasts with Malorie's rebellious nature when she was a kid. As she rows, both kids get hungry and she gives them food. You're a strong mother, Malorie. Keep going.

Just read Chapter Nine. Back in the present, Malorie thinks about what to call the suicide creatures, when they encounter a man traveling on a motorboat. He tries to get the three to take off their blindfolds, but then gets aggressive when Malorie refuses, taunting her and saying she's crazy. He even says that he's seen a creature. Malorie manages to get away from the crazy man, with both kids safe. Thank God.

Just read Chapter Eight. Malorie wakes up the next day and gets to know Tom better. He used to be an eighth grade teacher and had an eight-year-old daughter named Robin, who committed suicide in the bathtub, whether after looking at a creature or of her own accord. I think Malorie and Tom are gonna get along really well. But since Tom is absent from the present story, I don't think he'll survive this book. Damn.

Just read Chapter Seven. Back in the past, Malorie drives to the safe house and is taken in by the five housemates, who aren't too thrilled about her pregnancy. One of them, Tom, tells Malorie that the owner of the house died after seeing a creature and that it's indeed something living that's doing this to them. As Tom keeps talking, Malorie faints. Yikes.

Just read Chapter Six. Back in the present, Malorie and the children hear something in the water. It toys with their boat briefly before moving away to the shore. Malorie tells herself it was a black bear but fears it was one of those suicide creatures. Regardless, they got out alright, and are now going to continue their journey.

Just read Chapter Five. Three months have passed, and suicides are now happening every day. Though Malorie (still pregnant) remains skeptical about what's going on, the stories are revealed to be true when Shannon commits suicide after a blanket covering the window comes loose. Malorie then remembers an ad she saw in the papers about a house advertised as a safe haven for strangers. What's she gonna do now?

Just read Chapter Four. Back in the past, Malorie and Shannon see several citizens shielding their eyes while outside, on their way to buy the pregnancy test and back. When they get home, Malorie finds out she is pregnant. Meanwhile, another suicide has happened near their parents' house. Malorie wonders how serious this is and feels worried. Knowing what happens in five years, things don't look too good.

Just read Chapter Three. Back in the present, Malorie rows their boat (at one point, the boat gets stuck and the boy helps get it unstuck) as she wonders how far a person can hear and reflects on her training the children to rely on hearing rather than sight, realizing all the things the children have never seen. The three's survival relies entirely on the children listening for any threats. I hope they make it.
