it’s genuinely remarkable how much of the feelings of childhood are permeated throughout this book. It stirs up memories of feelings and thoughts of being a child of poor black parents around other poor black people that I haven’t really conceptualized since I was a child myself. So far it is a very honest depiction of being a young black girl born into poverty and a world obsessed with young white beauty.
