The polymath Alexander von Humboldt created the notion of an integrated cosmos—nature—without resorting to God. He saw our world as interconnected in complex webs of understanding. Further, he saw how human beings alter and denigrate this world in which we destroy the very nature from which we emerged and on which we depend for existence.

This one intrigues me. It fills in a blind spot in my reading.
