A bloodbath without justification?
I whole heartedly disagree.
The opening scene captures the viewpoint of a serial killer to perfection. The ultimate deep mind dive into the mind of a certain breed.

To completely convey a character's being, essence, the writing must be from that character's mind in every way. A serial killer must kill. What excites him or her is their obsessions, their desires, their paraphilias.

"One-night, two-night stands," Jay said dismissively. "You can prolong the parting, and you can stave off decay. But in the end it all catches up with you."

"All Jay's boys became part of him. They'd be with him forever, flesh of his flesh, loving him from the inside." - beautiful portrayal of the ultimate possession...
