Pronoun annoyance
27 y/o woman + 17 y/o teen boy mucking out a pond + they’re competing “to see who could throw the contents of _his_ bucket farthest”……
Really? I mean, she’s older, let’s go w/“her”! I honestly thot in this circumstance common practice wld be “their”, but seriously, his? And tho it’s not a recent pub, no, it’s not old enough for English language history to be an excuse

I’m enjoying this but…the protagonist feels very very young and it feels awkward and…every point and explanation is sooooo belabored
I don’t know. So I’m still really wanting to see what happens but really not enjoying the style or something…though I also wouldn’t say that the writing is poorly done

Between the magic system in the city and some of the personal and societal conditions, feels like Blood Over Bright Haven was inspired in part by this, though at least so far it’s more extreme

Just so much lazy writing, not paying attention to details already presented or using details that have side implications that don’t make sense.

Way too many details on appearance, clothes, furniture and room setups. Ppl just don’t notice or inventory everything that they see as part of natural observations

Definitely better once you’re into it for a while - I stop noticing the style and immature expression

This has gotten interesting and enjoyable, but the thing about Mercedes Lackey’s writing is the overdone emotional puppetry and the caricatured baddies-yes even in the current world, they seem overdone. Evil underworld queen wahey
