The character (or the author through the character) is describing “dignity” as a person behaving in a very robotic, non-sentient, unfeeling, carefree manner. He even describes it as an act that one only drops when they are alone. A composed person is admirable, but shouldn’t we strive to publicly be somewhere in the middle; not controlled by emotions but not completely hiding them either?
