An interesting character study so far. I do like how the main character isn't perfect and is very insecure. You can see this in her reactions to the white professor who has visited the country before and the black Americans who have a sordid history with the fort they tour

So far, so good. But there are a few times that made me go "huh?"
"elastic sprawl" in describing American tourists
and
"She tried to teach me [the flute] but I hated how spit bubbled through the notes and had to be drained after each piece."

As an ex-flutist.... what? Is the author thinking of a trumpet? You don't need to drain a flute of spit. Condensation forms, but you don't hear it "bubbling." Very odd
