The writing has more flare than Babel but the pacing is really stunted. Too much flaunting of research when the story should be exerting itself to keep our attention. I appreciate a historical fact but I'd wager 75% of this novel's text has been dedicated to outside references. Not great when you're trying to connect us with your original world and characters, which do show potential, that hasn't been tapped into.
