Definitely slower paced than Tigana and the vibes are very “of course we want to wage holy wars” without a lot of on page description of how the religions operate/ their core beliefs.
So it does feel as the reader, i have to rely on what i know the irl religious allegory is supposed to represent in order to resonate with the depth of the character’s convictions vs having substantial world building

IDK. The writing is fabulous and GGKs character work/POVs are incredible as always, but for a book with themes around religion and religious extremism, if I was an alien who had never heard of the world’s 3 major religions or studied history and didn’t pick up the allegory, I would be like…why are they fighting? But maybe that’s the point?

The symbolism of the desert versus flowing water, the juxtaposition of the different leaders and their relationships with their respective chancellors, the sun vs the moon vs the stars …oh GGK you a little problematic but
