“I was taken from Bessie’s neck, to which I clung with kisses…Thus was I severed from Bessie…”
It’s such a brief moment but 😭😭😭 must be my hormones and being a mom. I pictured my son and just started bawling.

Jane’s chastisement of herself for having affections and hopes for the medium ugly- I mean Mr. Rochester, is equally parts sad and hilarious. Sad in the way that she thinks so little of herself and Mr. Rochester is going out of hubs way to make her feel this way. Hilarious, cause like…it’s so teenage coded with how emo it all is.

I WILL say, Charlotte did a phenomenal job of laying the bricks for the twist later. It’s subtle but obviously there and I really enjoy it.

“I thought there were excellent materials in him; though for the present they hung together somewhat spoiled and tangled. I cannot deny that I grieved for his grief, whatever that was, and I would have given much to assuage it.”

“And was Mr. Rochester now ugly in my eyes? No, reader. Gratitude, and many associations, all pleasurable and genial, made his face the object I best liked to see; his presence in a room was more cheering than the brightest fire.”
JANE PLEASE 😭 Not the first medium ugly guy you’ve ever met please 😭

“The ease of his manner freed me from painful restraint; the friendly frankness, as correct as cordial, with which he treated me, drew me to him. I felt at times as if he were my relation, rather than my master: yet he was imperious sometimes still; but I did not mind that; I saw it was his way.”

Like I don’t mean to be over critical, but his immediate openness feels to me more of a man trying to force intimacy in a friendship to get more. And Jane, in her youth and inexperience, attributes it more to his character being open and communicative. Knowing what I know (and being a 35 year old woman lol), it sends red flags. lol

I am not particularly FOND of Mr. Rochester at this point in the novel. I know I (and Jane lol) eventually grow to appreciate him for what he is but the way he speaks of Adéle some how hurts. Also what the heck is wrong with Adéle’s mother. 😑
