The book is so uninterested in queer issues. Outing your sister to her crush is genuinely messed up and it's only given a quirky nod as a necessary boundary cross. I hate this. Queer indos deserve better.

IRIS SHARED THE LETTERS WITH ELLERY??? EWW AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE ROMANTIC?? Moving back to L.A for a teenage girl you fell in love with?? God I hate how Ellery has NO LIFE outside of Magnolia. And it's not treated as a massive creepy thing about her. Everything from breaking up with her gf and leaving for London is about Magnolia.

The confession scene is gross. And designed in a way so that Ellery has to confess. So that the onus of coming out isn't on Magnolia. All the flaws on Ellery's side feel contrived in a way that makes Magnolia entitled to a woman who think she's straight. And they just can't find a way around their age gap. If it was creepy for James to wait, then why isn't it creepy for Ellery to wait? Because she's a woman?

Iris is so much better at pep talking her sister about getting a masters degree based on what she's seen of her. And cardboard Ellery is just saying vague platitudes like "I can't imagine anyone stopping Tulip" you've never witnessed Magnolia being badass around you, Ellery. Just small talk.

"I never even thought to ask what you wanted to do." Again, it's really hard to convince me they're best friends when neither Ellery nor Magnolia give a shit about each other enough to ask actual pathos filled questions about each others lives.

"I'm carrying a really heavy load there!" (in reference to the baby Magnolia is carrying.) "A very cute heavy load." Ellery replies. Like wow, impeccable dialogue everyone!!! "Obviously, the cutest. There is no one cuter than her." Imagine if we got a scene with pathos instead of this nothing burger

Are we really not gonna get anymore out of their friend break up? Just "I fucked up" and "no you didn't" and "yes I did" that's it? Gosh I hope there's more

Why did Magnolia ask if Ellery was married like that's a thing gay people can casually do in this time period. Again she just never comes off interested in Ellery's queer identity as anything more than sexuality.
