Sometimes it really hits me how well gender roles are critiqued in this book. The young women stop seeking freedom because everyone encourages them to be quiet, to behave, to stay inside. They become unhappy, attention-seeking, desperate. Everyone fears cathy will be like Catherine, while treating her with the same carelessness. She was a “happy creature” as a youth but “could not be content.”

The perspective of a servant is turning out to be a brilliant way to tell the story. She knows the people well, so she can sometimes sense their feelings, but you never really know if she’s projecting what she believes onto them.
