I think the most disturbing part of this story remains the fact that the primary characters are often described as dirt-encrusted and almost never described as bathing. Like the single shoe thing, I'm sure it's symbolic, but I still get second-hand sensory upset

It's that 2/3 point of a book where I'm starting to lose interest.

Kid seems likeable and generally easy-going but I am starting to realize that he's not really a good guy

I first became aware of this book in my 20s and for a lot of reasons (immaturity, racism) am glad I left this on the shelf at the library instead of trying it then. I wouldn't have understood it, and would have judged either the book or myself harshly because of that. Now I'm older and less confident/arrogant about expecting the world to be understandable to me
