‘Was it alright for him to be happy? Could he afford to feel this way, after all the mistakes he had made?’

This book is so haunting and eerie, but I can’t figure out why. I feel like we’re sitting outside looking in on Shouji’s life, and we’re not allowed into his thoughts and feelings, so he comes across as cold and desperate.
