This book is funny! Did not expect that. Ishmael is not so objective or separated from the story because he talks to the reader which is something I've been told is a faux pas in writing >:( even though it works great here. When something weird happens it is nice that Ishmael starts it off with something like 'you wouldn't believe me, but its' true!'. Makes him feel like an actual person.

I think Mr Melville only fills this up with info dumping to give the reader a break from his writing because if it were just the story of Ahab and the crew it might be TOO good.

Herman just decides to put the best writing in this little two page chapter about the blacksmith who has had like 4 lines so far.
"Death seems the only desirable sequel for a career like this; but Death is only a launching into the region of the strange Untried; it is but the first salutation to the possibilities of the immense Remote, the Wild, the Watery, the Unshored"

Perhaps there is some benefit to reading abridged versions of classics...
Just a lot of chapters on whaling terminology and encyclopedia entries. Perhaps beneficial to readers when it came out but I do not need all this non-fiction smack dab in the middle of a compelling story.
