Just read Chapter Twenty-Two. Tom and Jules return to the house, unharmed and unfollowed. Not only did they find two huskies for guides, but also a box of birds they found in a hunter's garage. They plan to use the birds as an alarm system, so now they've made a bit of progress. Tom and Jules sit down in the kitchen, then prepare to tell the housemates everything that happened out there.

Just read Chapter Twenty-One. Back in the present, Malorie reflects on a horrible thing she almost did once. Before the children were born, Don suggested to her and Olympia about blinding the babies. Olympia was horrified, but Malorie understood. She almost did this when the children were infants, but stopped herself in disgust. Yeah, that was ... definitely horrifying to read.

Just read Chapter Twenty. A day has passed, and Tom and Jules are still not back. Don says he believes they won't come back and that he won't let them in if they do, fearing enemies using them as bait to steal their food. He angers the other housemates by talking about life without them and everyone getting more food without them. Then a knock comes on the front door. Are they back?

Just read Chapter Nineteen. Back in the past, Tom and Jules have been gone for five hours. The housemates nervously repeat tasks to occupy themselves while Malorie dozes off in the basement until Victor suddenly starts barking at the front windows. Worried about creatures outside, Malorie tells Felix to find garden tools for protection.

Just read Chapter Eighteen. Back in the present, Malorie cleans and dresses her wound from the wolves, worried she could pass out from the pain. She reflects more on her training the children as animals make noises along the river, which terrifies her due to thoughts about the creatures attacking the ones you love.

Just read Chapter Seventeen. Back in the past, as Malorie worries about her upcoming labor, Tom devises a plan to take a walk outside in search of dogs to use as guides, since they might be immune to the creatures. Jules agrees to go with him, while Don is against the idea. Tom and Jules leave the next day, saying they'll be gone for twelve hours, as Malorie thinks about how much they need Tom. Hope they succeed!

Just read Chapter Sixteen. Back in the present, the Boy hears something on the left river bank that Malorie worries could be the man from earlier. Suddenly, the boat gets wedged between two tree stumps and a pack of wolves shows up to attack. Malorie manages to get the boat unwedged before the wolves can do any serious damage and rows away to safety with the children. Thank God!

Just read Chapter Fifteen. Back in the past, a day has passed since Felix brought the water from the well, but the thirsty housemates are hesitant to drink the water, due to potential creature contamination. With no other options, Tom decides to drink a glass of water through a coffee filter while locked in Malorie's room. Tom's trial succeeds, and he doesn't go mad. The water is safe.

Just read Chapter Fourteen. Back in the present, Malorie reflects, while rowing, on a sentence she read in Olympia's baby book: "Your baby is smarter than you think." It reminds her about how the boy was once able to unlock his crib all by himself and make it all the way to Don and Jules's room. She hopes both her children are smarter than any potential threat they may encounter.

Just read Chapter Thirteen. Felix goes to the well to get water but hears a noise every time he goes. The third time, he hears it coming from the well, then the bucket feels heavier when he brings it up. Hearing wet footprints behind him, he runs back to the house in a panic and tells the others what happened. Nothing followed Felix back to the house, but the housemates block the windows and doors to be safe.
