The main character Malia was in a car accident that killed her parents and made her an orphan. She was taken in by a secret society of elemental wielders where she started training her own elemental power of water.

The main character is likable as the author has us connect with the loss of her parents and being in a new place. Through her actions the reader can see her as protective of her friends, mentally strong, and sociable. To be sympathetic the author connects the character to a problem or has something happen to the charter that would make them the good guy. To be repulsive they often have them be rude, a loner.
