for example: in greek mythology, the river lethe is the underworld stream of oblivion where souls drink to forget their past lives before reincarnation. it signifies that identity is merely accumulated memory; once washed away by lethe, the person becomes a blank slate. a core theme is that to move forward, one must erase their past. so the soul is nothing but memory!
