Wow! Rick made this trip at the last possible minute (1978)… right before the fall of the Shah of Iran and the Russian invasion of Afghanistan (1979). And he seems blissfully unaware. Other travelers have warned him of the dangerous undercurrents. But he and his friend enjoy eating watermelon and taking photos (only 9 per day to conserve film) of the locals with his telephoto camera lens.
