"'Crikey, sir!' said Wright. 'The books!'
'Do you feel there are too many?' [Gabriel] said. 'They accumulate, you see, and I like to revisit them.'
'I like them,' said Constable Wright unexpectedly. 'They give me a funny feeling. All those people who have learned things over hundreds of years and written them down.'

Why must I be at work?? Gabriel is about to find out why the church is locked, and I want to know who invented the mouse.

I may love this already: historical mystery in a new and interesting setting, a neurodivergent protagonist, an unlikely friendship dynamic, clever writing, and a murder to solve. What is NOT to love??

This is fun so far. I feel a little like I'm reading a fantasy novel, the rules of British law, and this whole very strange Temple has it's own governance thing is making it so that I'm unbalanced and in an unfamiliar setting. I'm also trying to think, I do not believe I have ever read a book set in the British system of law?? I think the lawyering is always done after they solve the murder.
