Nearly finished. I think I get what Camus is doing: the absurdity of being judged less for one’s actions than for a failure to perform the “right” emotions. Intellectually interesting, and definitely something I can imagine exploring with older students, especially around ideas of crime, criminality, and social judgement.

Just past three-quarters of the way through. I keep thinking about how much the novel relies on the victim being Arab and how Meursault’s “absurd” trial is only possible because the person he kills is socially erased. Reading it like this makes the absurdity feel entangled with colonial power and injustice.
