Tom Joad, Ma and the turtle are the best characters here! Especially that turtle. It was only a small cameo appearance but it set the tone for the whole novel.

This reads like a dystopian horror novel, and then you remind yourself it’s based on real-world phenomena. It’s a very compelling case against capitalism.
