Book 16

Book 16 - sets Zeus’ plan for Achilles in motion. We watch Achille’s original prayer to Zeus via Thetis begin. What Achille’s does not realize but we do is that a cost of his wish will be the death of Patroclus. And Zeus pays a price. He watches Sarpedon die as a result of his plan to get Patroclus killed.
It is very complicated and all for what? Achille’s rage at being slighted

End of book 23. Achilles cannot start Patroclus’ pyre. He needs Devine help. Because he is too enraged still to mourn.
Then the funeral games. The antithesis of book 1. Achilles wants to take Antilochus’ prize and give it to Eumedes who lost. He stops after a complaint. This is what happened in book 1 with Bresies. Achilles changes. He maintains peace and honor

Book 22 - A race to death
Hector is dead. I would have preferred if Achilles had fought Hector without help from Athena who tricks Hector into standing to fight , to quit running. And for Achilles she retrieves his missed spear. Hector dies and his corpse is dragged around the city. Inside the Priam walls, Hecuba and Hector’s wife Andromache grieve. The corpse is dragged around Troy

Book 21 - the river
The River god Scamander (Xanthus) does not like all the corpses Achilles is leaving in the river. Asks him to kill elsewhere. Achilles complies but Scamander then decides he needs to kill Achilles to save Troy. Almost does but Poseidon intervenes. Then all the gods fight each other . Zeus loves it. Achilles gets the Trojans back in Troy.

Poseiden saves Aeneas, and Apollo saves Hector. Achilles goes on a wild killing spree. Last line: his lethal hands were always drenched in gore.

And we are not to blame…no tardiness or laziness of ours allowed the Trojans [to kill] Patroclus . Book 18. - Divine Armor. Achilles knows that petrous is dead. He seeks revenge. He wants Hector dead and he develops a real blood last. He wants to slit the throats of lovely Trojan children. Hector ignores Palyfamus’ advice to retreat. Hector believes he can delay his fate. Thetis has new armor made for her son Achilles. It’s beautiful depicting a city at war and a village at peace.

Book 17 The most gruesome book in the Iliad. The Trojans and Greeks fight over the corpse of Patroclus. The body is dragged scraped fought over. Hector wears Achilles armor, which Patroclus wore. The Trojans want his body as a symbol of victory. The Greeks do not want to allow that. Zeus is sad for the god horses of Patroclus. Achilles will soon know. This war is now about blood lust

Zeus gets Poseidon out of the war. He sends Apollo to heal and strengthen Hector. Zeus makes his plan clear: Patroclus will enter the war,
Patroclus will kill Sarpedon, Hector kills Patroclus, Achilles kills Hector.
This ends with lone Ajax, atop a ship killing Trojans trying to burn it.

Poseidon enters the war to help the Greeks who are near annihilation. Hira makes herself irresistible with Aphrodite’s help. She seduces Zeus and they have magical God like love. Zeus falls asleep enabling Poseidon to remain undetected. The Greeks pushback. Ajax injuries Hector. The Greeks succeed in saving their ships.
